If patients wish to alter the shape or size of their nose, they may choose to consider the surgical option of rhinoplasty. This procedure is extremely effective in improving the overall appearance of the face for a boost in confidence.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a nose-shaping surgery that is done to alter the size, shape, and symmetry of the nose to bring it into better proportion with the rest of the face.

Rhinoplasty can be done to achieve the following:

  • Smooth a bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Straighten a nose that is crooked
  • Refine the size of a bulbous nasal tip
  • Narrow a nose
  • Reduce the size of a nose
  • Reduce the length of a nasal tip that over-protrudes

Rhinoplasty Procedure

The rhinoplasty procedure is a highly individualized procedure, and the exact technique used will differ depending on the patient. There are two main techniques used to perform this procedure: an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves creating a small incision under the nasal tip between the nostrils. This allows the surgeon to have complete access to the inner nasal structures to better sculpt the nose. The resulting scars are well-hidden in the natural nose contours and are inconspicuous.

Closed Rhinoplasty

With this technique, incisions are made inside the nostril. This approach is often used for patients who are in need of more minor adjustments to the nasal structures. The main advantage of this option is that there is no visible scarring after surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Your nose will usually be supported by being put in a splint after the rhinoplasty procedure. For the first couple of weeks, bruising and swelling is to be expected. Most people can return to work or school after 1-2 weeks, depending on the amount of activity required. Your surgeon will share with your specific instructions on how to care for your nose to ensure the best possible results. As swelling dissipates, you will notice the results of your procedure. Note it could take up to one year for your nose to completely heal.

Candidates for the Rhinoplasty Procedure

Individuals of many different ages can benefit from a rhinoplasty. Physically, the nose must be fully developed which is usually around the age of 14 for girls and 16 for boys. The main goal of this procedure is to improve your existing nose. The best way to determine if this procedure is right for your aesthetic goals is through a consultation at our office.
