Botox is an injectable treatment made up of botulinum toxin type A. Throughout the day, we make many different facial expressions. The repeated use of these facial muscles to make these expressions can eventually lead to lines and creases in the face. Botox works by relaxing these muscles, so that your facial expressions soften and these lines are greatly reduced.

Botox is commonly used to treat the following:

  • Forehead creases
  • Crow’s feet
  • Glabellar lines (frown lines)
  • The corners of the mouth
  • A “cobblestoned” appearance to the chin

The Botox Treatment

Botox injections are non-surgical, and they can be completed during an office visit. Treatment will first begin with a consultation with one of our dermatologists, during which you can discuss your aesthetic goals. On the day of treatment, a topical anesthetic numbing cream will be offered to ensure that you are comfortable. Many patients, however, do not need this as the injections are not very deep. The Botox will be injected using a small syringe into strategic points to gain the desired results.

No downtime is needed following the treatment. However, you will need to take the rest of the day off from strenuous exercise or activity to ensure the best possible results. Common side effects include mild redness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site, which will dissipate with time. Botox results typically last anywhere from 3-6 months.

Candidates for Botox

Adults who would like to soften the look of lines and wrinkles in their face can often benefit from Botox injections. Those who have deep lines between their eyes that make them look angry, sad, or tired, or those who are unhappy with the appearance of wrinkles in and around their eyes and forehead are examples of good candidates. However, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease should not receive Botox injections. The best way to determine if this treatment is right for you is to schedule a consultation appointment at our office. During this appointment, one of our skilled dermatologists will assess your face to determine if Botox is a good match for you.

Dermal Fillers

Individuals who are looking to soften the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and sunken areas on the face can often benefit from injectable treatments, also known as dermal fillers. This option is a great one for those who are looking for subtle improvements without undergoing surgery or experiencing downtime. At Ottawa Derm Centre, we use a variety of dermal fillers to help each patient meet their unique aesthetic goals.

Dermal fillers can help to achieve the following:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Soften facial wrinkles and creases
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Improve the look of recessed scars
  • Contour the lower face and jaw area

Injectables can assist in combating early signs of aging. However, it is important to understand that they cannot achieve the same results as plastic surgery procedures. Dermal fillers are temporary treatments, and ongoing injections will be needed to maintain results.

Filler Treatment Options

There are a number of different injectables on the market today. Each product is particularly made to have a certain texture and density, which means that certain fillers will work better for certain areas of concern. Your dermatologist will work with you to determine the filler that is right for you and your aesthetic goals. At Ottawa Derm Centre, we offer the following injectable treatments:

  • Juvéderm Fillers: This family of hyaluronic acid-based fillers includes Juvéderm Voluma, Juvéderm Vollure, Juvéderm Volbella, Juvéderm Ultra, and Juvéderm Volux.
  • Belotero: This dermal filler is approved to smooth out and fill in moderate to severe nasolabial folds.
  • Radiesse: This filler is a great option for patients looking to smooth out their wrinkles on the face or hands. Radiesse is a collagen stimulator to keep the skin looking tight and youthful.

Once you and your dermatologist have decided on the dermal filler that is right for you, treatment will be scheduled. Just before treatment, the targeted area will be cleaned, and a topical numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort. Then, a small syringe will be used to inject a precise amount of filler beneath the skin. There is no downtime required following injectable treatments, though exercise may need to be postponed for 24 hours. Results can last anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on the filler used.
