					 What is CO2 Skin Resurfacing

CO2 Skin Resurfacing is a process that decreases the signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, addresses hyperpigmentation, and reduces the visibility of blemishes, acne scars, and large pores. It is also used to remove lesions. The Candela CO2 is one of the key skin resurfacing options offered at the Ottawa Derm & Surgery Centre. It is non-invasive and hormone-free. The laser targets the water in the skin and vaporizes the top layers of the skin while heating deeper layers. The process stimulates collagen production and imparts a tighter, smoother, and toned appearance.
					 Who is an ideal candidate?

Ideal candidates for CO2 treatments have fine lines, furrows, deep wrinkles, discoloration, rough texture e.g. acne scaring, age spots, or sun-damaged skin. It is ideal for anyone seeking younger-looking skin without the long downtime associated with conventional resurfacing procedures.
The tone of your skin is not necessarily a barrier to CO2 skin resurfacing, although the thickness and texture may determine if you are a good candidate. If you are having other facial cosmetic surgery, for example, a facelift or eyelid surgery, you may be able to undertake CO2 skin resurfacing at the same time in order to improve your results.
					 How do I prepare?

To prepare for your CO2 treatment, avoid tanning or heavy sun exposure, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily for four weeks before the procedure. You should also avoid any deep facial peel procedures (e.g. dermabrasion, strong chemical peels) for four weeks in the lead-up to the treatment. Do not use medications that cause photosensitivity (such as doxycycline, or minocycline) for a minimum of 72 hours prior to the procedure.
					 Is there any downtime?

Immediately following the procedure, you can expect a sensation similar to a sunburn which lasts several hours. Most patients experience redness and swelling post treatment. You can expect peeling of dead skin from the treatment area which is a natural exfoliation process that may last 7 to 10 days. Ensure you avoid sun exposure until the redness of your skin is gone, and thereafter, apply sunblock and wear coverings that protect your face. Makeup can be worn approximately two weeks post-treatment. Typically, patients return back to work within a week to ten days.
					 How does it feel?

During the treatment, you can expect some moderate discomfort, but the numbing cream applied before the procedure typically makes any discomfort tolerable.
How long does a treatment take?

Depending on the area being treated, the process can take approximately 45 mins to 1 hour.
					 When will I notice results?

Initial results will become visible once the skin has healed from the procedure. For a light CO2 treatment, this typically takes 2 to 3 days. Results from deeper CO2 skin resurfacing treatments may take around 2-3 months given that your skin will take longer to heal. Generally, you’ll see the difference you want after only one treatment. In the days immediately following the treatment, your skin will gradually look softer and smoother, with less unwanted pigmentation. The fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and uneven texture will start to show improvement.
