Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure designed to restore a more refreshed, youthful appearance to the eyes. Because the skin around the eyes is especially thin and delicate, signs of aging often appear here earlier than in other areas of the face. Over time, this can result in sagging, drooping, or puffiness of the eyelids.

Blepharoplasty surgery can address:

  • Excess upper eyelid skin that obscures the natural eyelid fold

  • Puffiness of the upper eyelids that creates a tired appearance

  • Loose upper eyelid skin that may interfere with vision

  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids

  • Under-eye bags and dark circles

By carefully removing or repositioning excess skin and fat, blepharoplasty helps create a smoother, more open, and rested appearance while preserving natural eye shape and expression.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a surgical technique used to correct sagging or wrinkled skin of the upper eyelids. The procedure is designed to restore a more open, refreshed appearance while maintaining the natural contour of the eye.

During upper eyelid surgery:

  • A small incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid

  • Excess skin and fat are carefully removed or repositioned

  • Surrounding muscles may be adjusted to improve eyelid contour and function

The incision is well concealed within the eyelid fold, allowing for natural-looking results. Upper eyelid surgery can also improve vision when excess skin interferes with the visual field.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to improve under-eye concerns such as puffiness, excess skin, and wrinkles. It is designed to smooth and refresh the lower eyelid area while preserving natural eye shape and expression.

During lower eyelid surgery:

  • Excess fat causing under-eye bags is removed or repositioned

  • Loose skin and fine wrinkles are addressed

  • An incision is typically made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid, depending on the patient’s needs

This approach allows for precise correction with minimal visible scarring. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty helps create a smoother, more rested appearance without making the eyes look overcorrected or hollow.

Recovery after blepharoplasty varies by individual, but most patients experience temporary swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness around the eyelids during the early healing phase.

During recovery:

  • Swelling and bruising are common in the first 1–2 weeks

  • Cold compresses can help reduce discomfort and inflammation

  • Keeping the head elevated, including while sleeping, supports healing

  • Eyes may feel sensitive to light, wind, and sun

Most patients are able to return to work and normal daily activities within a few days to 1-2 weeks, depending on the nature of their job and the extent of the procedure. Strenuous activity should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.

Your cosmetic surgeon will provide detailed, personalized aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal results.

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) are adults who are bothered by signs of aging or functional concerns around the eyelids and are in good overall health. Common characteristics of suitable candidates include:

  • Visible excess eyelid skin that hangs over the natural fold of the upper eyelids or creates a heavy appearance.

  • Puffiness or fat protrusion in the upper and/or lower eyelids that does not resolve with rest.

  • Under-eye bags, dark circles, or loose lower eyelid skin contributing to a tired or aged look.

  • Good overall health, with no medical conditions that would impair healing or increase surgical risk.

  • Realistic expectations about what blepharoplasty can achieve.

Because eye health and medical history vary by individual, the best way to determine whether blepharoplasty is right for you is through a consultation.
