Hyperpigmentation, Dark Spots & Uneven Skin Tone

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern that causes areas of the skin to appear darker than the surrounding skin. It occurs when excess melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, is produced or deposited in the skin and can appear as brown spots, dark patches, sun spots or uneven skin tone.

There are many different causes of hyperpigmentation, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne and inflammation. Common types include sun-induced pigmentation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and melasma.

Because not all pigmentation is the same, the most appropriate treatment depends on the type and cause of discolouration, your skin type and your individual concerns. Types of Hyperpigmentation

Identifying the type of pigmentation is an important first step in determining how it should be treated.

Hyperpigmentation is the broad term used to describe areas of skin that become darker due to increased melanin.

Sun spots, sometimes called age spots or solar lentigines, are a type of hyperpigmentation associated with cumulative sun exposure. They commonly appear as defined brown spots on areas such as the face, hands, chest and shoulders.

Melasma typically appears as larger, irregular patches of pigmentation, often on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. It can be influenced by hormones, genetics, heat and sun exposure and requires a different treatment approach from many other forms of pigmentation.

Correctly identifying the type of pigmentation is important because a treatment that works well for one type may not be appropriate for another.

The best way to reduce dark spots on the face depends on their cause. Brown spots related to sun exposure may respond to light or laser treatments such as BBL®, IPL, MOXI® or other pigment-targeting treatments. Depending on your skin type and concerns, ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, arbutin, hydroquinone, azelaic acid and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) may be recommended. Other pigment-correcting ingredients may also be incorporated into a personalized medical-grade skincare routine.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important products for anyone managing hyperpigmentation. UV exposure stimulates melanin production and can cause existing pigmentation to become darker or return after treatment.
