As we age, the skin around our eyes can become saggy, and wrinkles can form. Blepharoplasty surgery is an excellent way to correct these signs of aging around the upper and lower eyelids for a rejuvenated look. Our facial cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Bonaparte and Dr. Chitte, have the experience needed to help you achieve your aesthetic goals!
What is a Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure to help restore a refreshed, youthful appearance to aging eyes. Since the skin around our eyes is so delicate, signs of aging may begin to appear around the eyes earlier than in other areas. This can lead to sagging and drooping eyelid skin.
Blepharoplasty surgery can address the following:
- Excess skin that obscures the natural fold of the upper eyes
- A puffy appearance to the upper lids, making the eyes look tired
- Loose upper eyelid skin that impairs vision
- Excess skin and lower eyelid wrinkles
- Bags and dark circles underneath the eyes
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
The blepharoplasty procedure can be done using a number of techniques, depending on the patient’s individual anatomy and the changes that need to be made. An eyelid lift may include upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
This technique is used to treat sagging, wrinkled skin on the upper eyelids. During this procedure, an incision is usually made in the natural crease above the eye, through which excess skin and fat will be removed and surrounding muscles will be adjusted to make the desired improvements.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
This technique is used to improve the appearance of the lower eyelids. Incisions are typically created on the outer edges of the lower eyelid, below the eyelashes and inside of the eyelid. Through these incisions, excess fat will be removed and repositioned to create a smooth contour beneath the lid. Sagging skin may also need to be removed or the lower eyelid muscle tightened, depending on the desired results.
Blepharoplasty Recovery
Following blepharoplasty surgery, visible bruising and swelling may occur, and the eyelids may feel tight. Cold compresses can help to alleviate any discomfort, as can keeping your head elevated while sleeping. Most people can return to their jobs about 10-14 days after surgery, depending on the nature of the job. It is important to protect your eyes from the sun and the wind, as your eyes will be sensitive after surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with specific recovery instructions on how to best care for your surgery sites.
Candidates for Blepharoplasty
Adults with excess, hanging skin that covers the natural fold of their upper eyelids, upper and lower eyelids that appear puffy, or deep grooves under the eyes can often benefit from eyelid surgery. Ideal candidates are healthy individuals that do not have medical conditions that can impair healing, and those without serious eye conditions. The best way to determine if this procedure is right for you is through a consultation with our facial cosmetic surgeons.
