Throughout the day, we make many different facial expressions repeatedly which can lead to fine lines and creases in the skin. Using the active ingredient called botulinum toxin, or neuromodulators allows the muscle to relax and prevents it from contracting. This effect can lead to reduced or erased wrinkles, decreased oil production, and facial contouring to provide a younger, refreshed appearance. At the Ottawa Derm Centre we use Botox® for our patients’ neuromodulator treatments – considered the gold standard in anti-aging injections.
Who is an ideal candidate for neuromodulators?
The best candidates for neuromodulator treatments are people who are physically healthy, with no history of neuromuscular diseases, who are not pregnant or nursing, and who are at least 18 years old.
Approximately 7-10 days before your treatment, you should avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve. You should also avoid such supplements as St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E during that time. Other products to avoid include topical applications such as tretinoin, retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, or any anti-aging products. You should also avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or any other hair removal. Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior. You should arrive at the clinic with a clean face, without any makeup.
Is there any downtime with a Botox® treatment?
There is no downtime after a Botox® treatment. Normally, you are able to return to your daily routine right away. The exception is you will not be able to undertake any exercise for 24 hours and you will not be able to lay down for at least 4 hours. This will keep the neuromodulator in the injected area and prevent the risk of unwanted side effects.
How does it feel?
Neuromodulators are a non-surgical treatment. A small syringe is used to administer into the skin. Typically, the treatment is not painful, but a topical numbing cream may be used to help alleviate any discomfort.
How long does a treatment take?
Your Botox® injections procedure can take anywhere from 5-30 minutes. This will depend on the area being treated and the units required. If this is your first treatment, you may need a few treatment sessions to perfect the look that you are hoping to achieve.
When will I notice results?
Neuromodulator results typically begin to appear within a few days after the injection. However, the full results may not be visible for about 1 – 2 weeks, so it is important to wait an adequate amount of time before seeking a touch-up treatment.
The results typically last 3 to 6 months, which will differ between patients based on their genetic make-up and their habits.
How much is a Botox® treatment?
Our nurses at ODC charge $11 a unit and our Dermatologist charges by the area.
How do I book a treatment?
All our patients start with a thorough consultation. During your visit, we will discuss your objectives and concerns. One of our specialists will complete an assessment and make recommendations that support your health and well-being. From your consultation, we can book your Botox® treatment or series of treatments.
