Do you have stubborn areas of fat that just won’t seem to budge despite regular exercise and a healthy diet? If so, liposuction may be a good option for you. This procedure is an effective option for slimming and contouring many different areas of the body for a more proportionate figure. At Ottawa Derm Centre, we perform liposuction on many different areas of the body.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure performed to reshape and slim specific areas of the body by eliminating excess fat deposits. It can be performed alone or along with other plastic surgery procedures to further enhance results.
Liposuction can treat the following areas:
- Abdomen and waist
- Hips and buttocks
- Thighs
- Upper arms
- Back
- Inner knees
- Calves and ankles
- Cheeks, chin, and neck
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction involves one or more small incisions being made in or near the treatment area. A thin tube called a cannula will be inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat beneath the skin. The fat is then suctioned out using a number of different techniques. Some of the most common types of liposuction used today include:
Tumescent Liposuction
An anesthetic “tumescent” solution will be injected into the treatment area to minimize discomfort and bleeding during the procedure.
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction
During this technique, ultrasound energy is used to help break apart the fatty tissue and loosen it from the body. This allows for easier removal of larger amounts of fat.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction
This technique uses laser energy to help loosen fat cells, making it easier to remove them from the body. Brand names include SmartLipo and Slimlipo.
Suction-Assisted Liposuction
A vacuum-like device is used to help remove fat from the body. Power-assisted liposuction is a similar technique that uses a tool to enhance the motion of the cannula used to remove fat.
Liposuction Recovery
Swelling, bruising, and discomfort may occur following liposuction, though this will dissipate over time. You may be given a special compression garment to wear for the first few weeks to help minimize swelling. Many people can return to work after just a few days, though this will depend on the nature of the job. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your treatment sites to ensure the best possible results.
Candidates for Liposuction
Adults who are bothered by stubborn areas of fat on their bodies can often benefit from liposuction. Ideal candidates are within 30% of their ideal body weight with firm, elastic skin, do not have medical conditions that could impair healing and are nonsmokers. Overall, the best way to determine if liposuction is right for you is to schedule a consultation with our facial cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Bonaparte or Dr. Chitte. During this appointment, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic goals, as well as ask any questions that you may have so that a personalized treatment plan can be made for you.
