What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is performed after a consultation with our surgeons to best understand the problems and/or discomfort you are experiencing. It is a common surgery that can give great relief to many patients. The surgery removes excess fat and/or tissue to minimize the size, restore symmetry and balance along with enhancing the contour and shape of the breasts. Your surgeon will discuss all options, recovery, and timelines with you during your consultation. It is recommended to discuss with your surgeon if you plan to become pregnant as breast reduction surgery can affect your ability to breast feed.
The Treatment
Breast reduction surgery patients will undergo general anaesthesia. There are a couple of different ways the tissue and fat can be removed depending on the size, shape and integrity of the skin on the breasts. Most often an incision is made around the nipple, and from their tissue and fat will be removed. In some cases, an incision may be made under the breast contour to also remove excess skin. The final step is to reposition the nipples to ensure a balanced, well-shaped breast contour. The incisions are stitched with meticulous care to ensure minimally visible scars. During post-surgery recovery, patients will commonly experience some swelling and bruising.
